Putin Warns of Cold War-Style Missile Crisis Over U.S. Plans in Germany

Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a stark warning to the United States of a potential Cold War-style missile crisis. In a speech to sailors from Russia, China, Algeria, and India marking Russian navy day in St Petersburg, Putin cautioned that if Washington deploys long-range missiles in Germany starting from 2026, Russia would respond by stationing similar missiles within striking distance of the West.

Putin compared the U.S. plans to the NATO decision in 1979 to deploy Pershing II launchers in Western Europe, stating that the current situation is reminiscent of the events of the Cold War. He also mentioned that Russia could resume production of intermediate and shorter range nuclear-capable missiles and then consider where to deploy them after the United States brings similar missiles to Europe and Asia.
