Arizona Governor Hobbs Faces Probe Over Alleged ‘Pay-to-Play’ Scheme
Arizona Governor Katie Hobbs is currently under scrutiny as the Arizona Attorney General’s Office investigates allegations of a “pay-to-play” scheme. This probe was launched at the request of State Senator T.J. Shope, who expressed concerns about what he referred to as a “pay-to-play scheme” involving Governor Hobbs, the Department of Child Safety (DCS), and political donors.
The investigation centers around claims that Governor Hobbs approved a substantial rate increase for Sunshine Residential Homes, a group home operator, despite the company and its executives making significant donations to Hobbs’ inauguration and the Arizona Democratic Party. This approval came after the company was previously denied an increase.
Sunshine Residential Homes, which provides services for foster children, reportedly received a nearly 60% increase in taxpayer funds through the Arizona Department of Child Safety (DCS) after donating approximately $400,000 to Hobbs, including to her campaign and inauguration, as well as to the state Democratic Party.
The investigation seeks to determine whether there was any wrongdoing or corruption involved in the approval of the rate increase. Senator Shope has raised concerns about potential violations of laws regarding bribery, fraud, procurement, conflicts of interest, and illegal expenditures of state money.
A spokesperson for Hobbs’ office has denied the allegations, stating that the governor and her office had no involvement in the agency’s decisions regarding Sunshine. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are awaited. – Posted 06/08/2024, check back for updates
